Supporting collaborative sense-making in emergency management through geo-visualization

چکیده
In emergency management, collaborative decision-making usually involves collaborative sense-making of diverse information by a group of experts from different knowledge domains, and needs better tools to analyze role-specific information, share and synthesize relevant information, and remain aware of the activities of others. This paper presents our research on the design of a collaborative sense-making system to support team work. We propose a multi-view, role-based design to help team members analyze geo-spatial information, share and integrate critical information, and monitor individual activities. Our design uses coordinated maps and activity visualization to aid decision-making as well as group activity awareness. The paper discusses design rationale, iterative design of visualization tools, prototype implementation, and system evaluation. Our work can potentially improve and extend collaborative tasks in emergency management. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Visualization Techniques to Empower Communities of Volunteers in Emergency Management
Information and communication technologies might help to emergency communities of volunteers to both empower community participation and improve their capacity to respond to unexpected events. However, designing technology to support these benefits places unique visualization challenges that go beyond the current state of research on public participation tools and related technologies. Empoweri...
متن کاملIntroduction to Ubiquitous Cartography and Dynamic Geovisualization with Implications for Disaster/Crises Management
Several large-scale data/information infrastructures (SDI) are being created (INSPIRE, GMES) to support management and decision-making processes, and they are also used for solving a wide range of problems, including crisis management. These solutions require updated, precise, interoperable and integrated spatial data and information equipped with metadata. Up-to-date information, their suitabl...
متن کاملCollaborative virtual geographic environments: A case study of air pollution simulation
The integration of high dimensional geo-visualization, geo-data management, geo-process modeling and computation, geospatial analysis, and geo-collaboration is a trend in GIScience. The technical platform that matches the trend forms a new framework unlike that of GIS and is conceptualized in this paper as a collaborative virtual geographic environment (CVGE). This paper focuses on two key issu...
متن کاملReal-Time Data Visualisation in Collaborative Virtual Environment for Emergency Management
A collaborative virtual environment (CVE) is a shared virtual environment used for collaboration of many participants that may be spread over large distances. CVEs have been widely used in emergency management, especially for education, training and assessment. This paper describes the design and implementation of a prototype system that facilitates emergency management via a CVE using real-tim...
متن کاملA Framework for Sensemaking in Collaborative Information Seeking
An important aspect of collaborative information seeking (CIS) is making sense of the information found, i.e., collaborative sensemaking. We conducted an ethnographic study of the CIS activities of healthcare providers in a hospital emergency department to gain a conceptual understanding of why and how sensemaking occurs during CIS activities. Based on these findings, we discuss a framework of ...
